The Dark Side of Modeling.

Something that has been bugging me lately is the direction the fashion industry is going, especially in small towns and cities like mine.

When I first started modeling back in June, I thought everything was great. I thought I would do some research on modeling agencies in my area, get some call backs, get signed, and be on my way. But sadly, things didn’t go quite as planned.

I want to write this blog today as a warning for any girl looking to get a break in the modeling industry. I’m not saying you shouldn’t do it, but I am saying there are some things you must be careful about when first starting out. And hopefully after reading this, you can learn from my mistakes.

First of all, when finding a local agency, do lots and lots of research on them! Especially if the agency is a local or small town/city one, but also be just as careful in large cities too. There are far to many (bad) or (fake) modeling agencies who are only to willing to rob you of a couple thousand dollars.

So how do you tell if an agency is fake? When I signed to my first agency, I did lot’s of research online. I Facebooked them, I talked to other models represented there, I looked up reviews on google, and everything came back perfectly fine. tabithashoot2

What I didn’t realize was that agencies are smart. They know you’ll be doing the research online and are all to prepared with fake reviews and news feed making it seem like they have a lot of business. You have to be smarter!

My biggest mistake I overlooked when signing was this: never should an agency ask you for money up front. One thing you need to remember is the agency is making an investment in you, not the other way around. Therefore, any photo shoots, even for beginning portfolio work, should not cost you any money.

If they ever say you have to pay a certain amount for your portfolio pictures, or to get onto their website, or any other reason for payment, know that something is wrong.

Another thing you don’t want to do is be to eager or naive. This is another mistake I made because being to excited when an agent says, “I can get you to New York or Paris”, definitely clouds your judgment. This way, you end up making decisions based on your emotions instead of thinking it through.

Remember that you as a model are just as much of a business person as the agent, so don’t get intimidated when going for an interview. Listen to what the agent is saying, read the contract through and take your time reading it. Have another third party look over the contract before signing it as well.

All of these important tips are mistakes I made going into my first signing, and I am still caught up in the mess of it. Therefore, please take this advice and go into any interview or signing with as much research on the agent and agency as possible, have a clear head and good judgment, and don’t let phrases with “New York”, “Venice”, or “Paris” cloud your judgment.

Now more then ever, pollution and the increasing amount of waste and destruction in our world is really important. It’s hard to combine environmentally friendly and fashionable together, but that’s exactly what the founder of Master and Muse is doing.

It’s Monday and there’s no better way to start off the new week than with a hot new tune freshly downloaded onto your iPhone. or spotting you fav star on the cover of you fav magazine!

In this generation, we see a lot of music stars blended with the fashion world. Rihanna, Beyonce,  Arianna Grande, just to name a few. But one star has recently been given the honor only millions of models could ever dream about.

Yes, I’m talking about Taylor Swift’s photo on the cover of Vogue UK!

Whether you’re a fan of Swift’s or not, her image on the cover of British Vogue is stunningly beautiful. Plus, it’s a HUGE career step for her.

Granted, Swift has graced the covers of American Vogue and Teen Vogue, but along with this cover comes a new branch of music for the pop star as well.

Swift tells Vogue, “This time around I’ve chosen the brave and bold way of going about things,” she said. “Because with this album I’ve completely changed the sound of everything I’ve done until now. So it’s interesting to not be afraid of that. You know, I don’t want to hurt people’s feelings, I don’t want to betray Nashville, whatever, but essentially it comes down to challenging yourself as an artist.”

Also in this issue, Swift let’s us in to her personal life and her thoughts on dating. Apparently, she is not looking for a relationship, and doesn’t see how one could fit in with the way her life is at this time.

Taylor’s new album will be released on October 27th, and has many fans excited to hear her new sound!

Dolce and Gabbana Tax Evasion

Famous court cases…. There are many court cases that spread widely into the public eye. O.J. Simpson, Jodi Arias, and George Zimmerman just to name a few.

Court cases can easily blow up the world of multi-media. A current court case, that has recently been given a sentence, is the Dolce and Gabbana case.

For those who don’t know, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, are two famous Italian fashion designers who have been designing for almost 30 years. Their designs have been featured in top fashion magazines including Vogue, Italian Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle, and more.

In 2004 and 2005, the duo Italian fashion designers failed to pay $55 million(US Dollars) in taxes. They were originally fined a charge of 343.3 million euros ($439.70 million U.S.) and eventually sentenced to one year and six months time in jail.

About ten years ago, the fashion designers had sold their company to a Luxembourg-based holding company called Gado Srl, which is a popular spot for holding companies due to it’s banking industry and tax friendly status.

For this reason, the Italian tax authorities believed Dolce and Gabbana had undergone the sale to initially avoid paying taxes on the transaction. This began a long and wide spread investigation of the designers financial status.

The designers. of course, pledged innocent and deny any of the tax evasion charges.

The fashion designers are represented and loved by celebrities including Naomi Campbell, Katy Perry, Beyonce, and Madonna. Their fans and celeb support has been constant throughout the years in supporting the group and the company.

In fact, the fashion designers turned their tax evasion case into inspiration for their designs and showcased them in Milan fashion week, Sept. 23rd 2014.

The public support for the group has been very positive despite the sentencing of both the designers. Websites, videos and pictures are everywhere on the web following the case. You can find more information on websites such as Forbes.com, Wall Street Journal, and The Huffington Post.

Each website has a good detailing and understanding of the court case. Although, I have found the exact number the designers have been charged for varies slightly between each site.

Most of the sites that have written about the case include an outline of how the case began and what verdict has been given. I would say, to improve the sites, an actual outline of the dates in which the statements have been made would be nice.

Overall, most websites are laid out the same way, giving a detailed description of the case-how it started and where it’s at now. Most of the information I found has been accurate and constant throughout the websites, except the amount of money they have been charged.

In the end, Dolce and Gabbana have been sentenced to eighteen months in jail, but are likely to appeal the verdict continuing the case further still.
