Becoming a Fashion Journalist

Fashion Journalism…..Sounds pretty glamorous right? Often people tend to think of traveling the world and writing about the latest fashion show or trends, talking high fashion with designers and photographers and blogging about Marc Jacobs new collection as an enchanting and prestigious way of life. And indeed, the life does have its alluring and stylish means of making a living, but there’s a lot that goes into being a successful fashion journalist.

What is it that make’s someone stop and say, “I want to be fashion journalist”? So often your ideal career changes as you make the steps through high school, then college, and then next thing you know-you’re on your own and in need of a job.

I didn’t know right away what I wanted my career to be, but it came to me about half way through my sophomore year of college.  I was a staff writer for the college newspaper, though I had never written for a newspaper before. It was a different, but exhilarating experience.

Being thrown in to writing in this knew way had a huge impact on what I wanted, or what I thought I wanted. All the sudden, I was finding myself taking on a more journalistic approach to everyday life. I was becoming more and more curious about day to day events and actions, asking more questions, and wanting to find out what the whole story was. That was when I realized I had found the right major for me.

So, how does fashion come into play? I have always had a love for fashion. Whether it be personal style or watching the spring collection of Valentino in Milan Fashion week, fashion is a huge part of my life. Therefore, it just makes sense to combine the two for my idealistic career and future.

Although, the fashion industry is incredibly competitive and hard to break into, it’s really about making your start, building your portfolio, and getting those connections. It’s also important to have a wide range of education in various writing styles and being familiar with programs like Word and Excel.

There are more aspects to journalism including: knowing how to work a camera and take good photo’s, different wed designs and techniques, and becoming familiar with video and audio. Because journalism is increasingly becoming more popular online, it’s important to know how to work the web and certain programs like Photoshop or Premier.

There are many websites, videos, and blog sites that give helpful tips about getting started and becoming a successful journalist in fashion. Some sites include: careerbear.com, degreedirectory.org, and blog site, thechicdaily.com.

There are many paths you can take in this highly sought-after industry. Blogging, photographer, fashion marketing, design, working in publication, becoming an editor or writer for magazine, online coordinator for any fashion company/designer/ photographer or even being a freelance journalist.

There are many possibilities, but the first step is committing to the hard work it takes to become successful and being dedicated to your job and your goals as a journalist.
